• I Don’t Know What a Yankee Is, But I Have Red Socks at Home

By Lizzie @ What Makes My Kid Cry Today

Real Life. Real Laughs. Real Jesus.

We were all curled up watching a baseball game together—one of those fun family nights where everyone was engaged, snacks were flowing, and yes, we absolutely knew who was playing.

That’s when my oldest, 10 years old at the time, looked up and said with total conviction:

“I’m not going for the Yankees.”

    Naturally, I asked, “Why not?”

    He shrugged and replied,

“Because I don’t know what a Yankee is… but I have red socks at home.”

    Cue the belly laughs.

At first, it was just a funny moment. A classic “my kid said what?!” kind of line that makes you laugh every time you retell it.

But later, it struck me—there was something kind of profound in that 10-year-old logic.

He didn’t choose based on stats, legacy, or loyalty.

He picked what felt familiar. What was his.

He stood with what he knew.

And isn’t that how faith works sometimes?

We may not know every answer.

We may not understand the whole playbook.

    But we choose what’s real.

We stand on what we do know.

    Like God’s faithfulness.

    Like the peace He gives.

Like the promises He’s already spoken over our lives.

This week’s episode on the podcast is all about that one-liner and the way it keeps echoing in my heart—reminding me that faith doesn’t always need to be complicated.

Sometimes, it’s just about choosing your side based on what’s already in your hands… even if it’s just a pair of red socks.

  • 😩 Mommy Meltdown Monday: “I’m Not Yelling, I’m Just… Passionate”

By Lizzie @ What Makes My Kid Cry Today

Real Life. Real Laughs. Real Jesus.

What made my kid cry today?

I told him to put on socks.

    What made me cry today?

    The sock situation.

    The laundry pile.

The fact that no one seems to hear my voice unless I whisper “ice cream” from across the house.

    It’s Monday.

    I’m tired.

I’ve already reheated my coffee twice.

    And I yelled this morning.

    Not because I wanted to.

Not because I’m a terrible mom.

But because I asked four times and then stepped on a piece of cereal so sharp I thought I was going to need stitches.

    💥 The Meltdown

    It wasn’t pretty.

There were shoes being launched across the room (not by me—this time).

    There were tears.

And at one point, I dramatically muttered, “I’m doing everything for everyone all the time and no one even notices!”

    Classic.

    Textbook.

    Monday.

    💛 The Grace

But here’s what happened after the meltdown:

My toddler climbed on my lap and wiped my tears with his entire fist.

(Effectively smearing banana on my cheek, but still—his heart was in it.)

My older kid said, “Sorry for not listening.”

My middle one just hugged me without words.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was grace.

    ✨ Faith Reminder:

Sometimes I think God must be so disappointed in my mom moments.

    The yelling.

    The eye rolls.

The sighs when someone needs something again.

But He’s not shocked by my meltdowns.

    He doesn’t back away.

    He leans in.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

    — Psalm 34:18

Even when that spirit is crushed by crusty socks and scattered Goldfish crackers.

📝 So here’s your reminder, mama:

    If you melted down today?

    You’re still a good mom.

    You’re still called.

    You’re still covered in grace.

Your meltdown doesn’t disqualify your mission.

    You’re just human.

    And God knows it.

  • ✨ Small Acts, Eternal Impact

By Lizzie @ What Makes My Kid Cry Today

Real Life. Real Laughs. Real Jesus.

    Matthew 25:40 Devotional

📖 “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” — Matthew 25:40 (KJV)

    📝 Reflection

Today, I cut the crust off a sandwich.

I re-folded the same shirt my toddler “helped” with.

I filled a sippy cup. Again.

I said “use your words” with more love than I felt.

And not one of those things made it to my to-do list.

They’re the small things—too small to feel spiritual.

But in God’s eyes? They are acts of love. And love always counts.

Matthew 25:40 reminds us that when we serve others, we’re serving Jesus Himself.

Yes—even when it’s crusts and crumbs and conflict resolution.

These little daily sacrifices—made in love, offered in faith—are the Kingdom work no one applauds but heaven notices.

The world may not see it, but God does.

    🙏 Prayer

    Lord,

Thank You for seeing the hidden things.

Help me serve my family with joy, not resentment.

Let me remember that even the smallest acts—when done in love—matter deeply to You.

Give me eyes to see the holy in the ordinary, and the courage to keep showing up when it feels like no one notices.

    Amen.

    💛 Mom-to-Mom Reminder

    You’re not “just” making sandwiches.

    You’re not “just” folding laundry.

You’re showing up. You’re loving well.

And in God’s economy, nothing is wasted.

So next time you wipe a face or pick up a sock for the 40th time, remember this:

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for Me.”
