• 🍫 Because We’re Boys

Flashback Moment — A Few Years Ago

It was one of those ordinary afternoons — the kind where the house was noisy, the kitchen smelled like a mix of lunch leftovers and something sweet, and the boys were circling like sharks around the counter.

I had barely turned my back before the box of eclairs disappeared.

They were sitting there, all five of them, happily devouring those cream-filled pastries like it was their job.

Me: “I don’t know how y’all can eat those.”

Second oldest, mouth full and smiling big: “It’s because we’re boys!”

And that was it. End of discussion. Logic, apparently, didn’t stand a chance against boyhood confidence.

I remember laughing so hard. But later that night, as I wiped chocolate fingerprints off the counter (and the fridge handle… and maybe a light switch or two), I kept thinking about how sure he was.

No hesitation. No second-guessing. Just this is who we are.

Sometimes I wish I had a little more of that kind of certainty.

Because somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we start overthinking everything — what we eat, what we say, what we do, how we look, if we’re doing enough, being enough, feeling enough.

We trade in joy for justification.

    Spontaneity for self-consciousness.

But kids… they just live. They enjoy the moment in front of them.

They don’t worry if they’ve “earned” the eclair — they just thank you (if you’re lucky) and bite in before you can change your mind.

And maybe that’s a little glimpse of the kind of joy God wants for us.

    Not careless, but carefree.

Not consumed by guilt or overthinking, but free enough to enjoy His goodness right where we are — sticky hands, crumbs on the floor, laughter in the background, and all.

Life doesn’t always give us big mountaintop moments. Sometimes it’s just a box of eclairs, a kitchen full of chaos, and a reminder that joy doesn’t have to make sense to be real.

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

    — Psalm 118:24 (ESV)

So maybe today, let’s eat the “eclairs” in front of us — whatever that looks like.

Let’s enjoy the good things God’s placed in our hands without overanalyzing them.

Let’s smile a little more, laugh a little louder, and remember that sometimes the best explanation is the simplest one:

    “It’s because we’re His.”

  • 💍 What Makes My Kid Cry Today: The Jewelry Store Meltdown

If motherhood has taught me anything, it’s that kids can find any reason to fall apart. And sometimes, those moments turn into lessons that stick with me long after the tears dry.

    This week’s meltdown?

I went to the jewelry store.

    That’s it.

I wanted to get a quote for a new wedding ring to replace my original one—a simple errand. But while I was standing there, looking at sparkly rings, my phone started buzzing. It was a FaceTime call from my oldest.

When I answered, I saw my 4-year-old in full meltdown mode—red face, tears, the whole show. My oldest sighed, “Mom, he’s crying. He wants to see you.”

    And there it was.

My son’s big brown eyes on the screen, crying because I had left without him. In his mind, my being home meant I was his. Not running errands. Not doing anything else—just there.

I couldn’t help but laugh. But it also tugged at my heart.

When We Can’t See the One We Love

Driving home afterward, I started thinking… don’t we do that with God sometimes?

When He feels quiet or when life shifts in ways we don’t understand, we panic. We cry, “God, where did You go?”

We forget that just because we can’t see Him doesn’t mean He’s not there.

    Isaiah 41:10 reminds us:

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God’s love isn’t dependent on our ability to feel it. His presence doesn’t disappear just because life looks different. Just like I never stopped being “Mom” when I stepped out of the house, He never stops being God when He’s working behind the scenes.

    A Reminder in the Rings

Standing in that jewelry store, surrounded by glass cases full of gold and diamonds, I couldn’t help but think about how love and faith age over time.

My ring tells a story—of years, laughter, hard seasons, and grace. It’s not being replaced because it lost meaning. It’s being renewed because it’s precious.

And maybe that’s what God does in us, too. He doesn’t discard the old. He renews what’s valuable. He refines the pieces that have weathered life’s storms and makes them shine again.

    The Lesson

So the next time you feel like God has stepped out of the room, remember this:

He’s still there. Still working. Still loving you.

Just like my son couldn’t see me but could reach me through that call, you can always reach God through prayer. He’s never too far.

Even when it feels like He’s left, He’s probably just working on something beautiful—something meant to shine.

  • 🐾 What Made My Kid Cry Today: I Won’t Let Him Eat Doggie Ice Cream

By Lizzie @ What Makes My Kid Cry Today

Real Life. Real Laughs. Real Jesus.

    It was a simple “no.”

    A reasonable one.

    A logical one.

“No, you can’t eat the dog’s ice cream.”

    Cue instant heartbreak.

Like I had just crushed every dream he’d ever had.

Never mind the fact that the label literally said “For Dogs Only.”

Never mind the smell. Or the texture.

To him, it was cold. Sweet. Probably delicious.

And I was the cruel warden standing between him and joy.

At first, I laughed. Because, honestly—it was ridiculous.

    But then I started thinking…

We do the same thing with God.

We want something that looks good.

    Feels good.

Seems like it should be ours.

And when He says no—we pout.

    We cry.

    We assume He’s being unfair.

But what if that “no” is protection, not punishment?

I think about how many things I’ve begged God for:

    Opportunities that looked exciting.

    People I wanted to impress.

    Plans I thought were perfect.

    And He said no.

I didn’t understand in the moment.

I may have even cried like a toddler denied a treat.

But later? I saw the wisdom. The kindness. The grace hidden in the refusal.

Just like I wasn’t trying to ruin my child’s day—I was protecting his stomach.

God isn’t trying to ruin our lives—He’s protecting our hearts.

    He sees what we can’t.

He knows what’s really meant for us.

And sometimes the kindest thing He can do is block us from the thing we think we want.

    🙏 Faith Reflection

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” — Psalm 84:11

If He’s saying “no,” it’s not because He’s withholding something good.

It’s because that thing was never going to be good for you.

    Cry Level: Instant meltdown

Mom Response: Gently holding boundaries (while trying not to laugh)

Faith Takeaway: God’s “no” is often love in disguise.
